Do I have to take the Grad Exam?
Yes! All high school students must take and pass the Alabama High School Graduation Exam in order to graduate from
high school.
How many sections are on the Grad Exam?
There are five sections on the Grad Exam: Reading, Language, Science, Math and Social Studies.
When do you sophomores take the Grad Exam?
All sophomores will take the Grad Exam in March 2008. If you took and passed biology and/or algebra I during your
freshmen year, you had the opportunity to take the science and/or math portion of the Grad Exam in March 2007 or September
2007.
What happens if I don't pass all sections the first time I take it?
Students will have multiple opportunities to take the Grad Exam if they don't pass all sections on the first attempt.
Sophomores who don't pass a section or sections of the Grad Exam in March 2008 will have another chance to take unpassed sections
in March of their junior year (March 2009). If sections still remain unpassed, students will have chances to take sections
of the Grad Exam in July (between junior and senior years), September (of senior year), December (of senior year) and March
(of senior year).
What if I am absent for one or all of the days the Grad Exam is administered in March of 2008 when I'm a sophomore?
Sophomores who miss a day of the Grad Exam in March 2008 will have an opportunity to make up those sections in September
2008 (your junior year).
How many questions do I have to get right to pass?
Is there a penalty for guessing or leaving questions unanswered?
No.
What can I do to prepare myself for the the Grad Exam?
First, it is important that you understand the concepts being taught in the classroom because teachers base their lesson
plans on content areas covered on the Grad Exam. Second, teachers can provide additional exercises and questions to
insure you understand the concept covered on the Grad Exam. Also, eating breakfast and getting a good night's sleep
are key factors in making sure you are physically and mentally prepared for the Grad Exam.
When will I know if I passed the Grad Exam?
Normally scores are available in the guidance office no sooner than a month after the exam is given.
If I don't pass a portion of the Grad Exam, will I know what areas need improvement?
